This also happens to me with exactly the same symptoms: slowly dimming, unresponsive function controls, then brighten again on it's own without any sort of user input or after a delay of a few seconds. This is on different hardware: a Sony Vaio SZ1XP laptop. -- Brightness controls on ThinkPad
