In Kubuntu 8.10, my resolution is was automatically set to 1280x1024. I
changed it to 1152x864 by clicking the Display config under system
settings, but it reverted back to 1280 after reboot.

Hi there,
Thanks for attaching the above. Can you run the following:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X server
Then there should be a /var/log/Xorg.0.log file as you needed to have made that
attempt as descibed above for it be present.
