I'd like to suggest something.
Try to run this command in the terminal:
alsamixer -Dhw
Pay attention to the -Dhw part.
In the screen that shows up, DOUBLE check if the PCM volume is set to 0.
It seems that on some Intrepid installations, that is inexplicably so.

The PCM volume has not been at 0. I anyway pumped it and other settings
up for trying, but nothing helped. I was sometimes only able to hear
some strange clicking and very quiet noise, that's all.

I have always this issue: movies, flash, mp3, ogg, etc. - so anyway what I'm
playing, I never hear any sound.
I tried all what is on this page and also made an output of this script. Here
