I updated to 9.04 today. No problem at all!! I don't understand the
internals of the problem, so I can't state unequivocally that the
problem is fixed, but it's got to be good sign. Thanks to every body
who has worked on this.

could you run ldd /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/2/libgconfbackend-xml.so and add
the log to the bug? usually such errors are due to local libraries
version installed not using the packaging system and being used before
the ubuntu version

The attachment apt-term.log doesn't display properly. Apparently this
is because it is flagged as text/html instead of text/plain. I don't
know why it got set that way or how to change it.
