I don't remember which was the MySQL Server version when it happened in
8.04 Desktop, I can say it was which Synaptic installed. Now I'm using
Ubuntu 8.10 and the version installed is 5.0.67-0ubuntu6.
Yes, I do connect from the local machine.
Anyway, I've changed the grant sentence to:
grant sel

I tested the commands you posted on an 8.04 desktop and they worked
fine for me. I was just wondering if you're connecting from the local
machine or not? Also, which version of MySQL are you using? The
version I tested with is mysql-server-5.0-5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.3.
