I have this bug too, on Jaunty upgraded from Intrepid. I am seriously
thinking never to upgrade again... You never know what strange bug might
hit you due to misconfiguration / old config files etc. Could someone
please be kind and inform us whether there is any work being done for
this bug?

Reproducible:
Synaptic > Settings > Preferences > Color (tab) > (Choose a color for
"upgradable" items) > Click either "OK" or "Apply"

since my synaptic now hangs up every time I try to reset my
proxy settings to "No proxy", this is VERY important for me,
not "undecided"

On jaunty, synaptic freezes most of the times I try to save preferences.
Combined with another bug (reported elsewhere) that involves synaptic
"forgetting" certain settings between 2 runs, this is *really* annoying
and makes synaptic almost unusable.

I don't if this may help you but i had this problem too. My synaptic (ubuntu
8.10) was always freezing whenever i tried to change any preferences. I solved
it by resetting gnome settings to default. I just removed in my home the
following dirs:
.gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

No reason to panic, just focus on your breath.
You have confirmed your own bug report. Anyway, since i think we got the
information we need (thanks for the backtrace), I'm letting it stay as
confirmed, so a developer can have a look.
Meanwhile, using the terminal is your workaround:
