Public bug reported: I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 onto my laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 2515).
For various reasons, I don't want it installed to my internal HDD, so I'm trying to install it on an external HDD connected through USB. I run the Live CD and after Ubuntu has gone through its setting up, I plug in the external HDD. Ubuntu sees the three parts of the external HDD. I can read files stored there and save files to those partitions. The fact that Ubuntu can see the external HDD is evidenced by the output of SUDO FDISK -L, which is: Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x509ee0a7 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 1530 12288000 27 Unknown /dev/sda2 * 1530 13567 96685056 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 13567 19458 47314944 7 HPFS/NTFS Partition 4 does not end on cylinder boundary. Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361344 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x94e494e4 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 2010 16145293+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sdb2 2011 8538 52436160 5 Extended /dev/sdb3 8539 8610 578340 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sdb4 * 8611 9729 8988367+ 83 Linux /dev/sdb5 2011 8538 52436128+ 7 HPFS/NTFS So now I try to run the Install program. Steps 1-3 are OK and routine, but I hit problems on step 4 because Ubuntu will only give me the option of installing to my internal HDD. Devices /dev/sdb? are completely ignored, as is demonstrated on the attached screenshot. I can only attach one file it seems, but if I select "Manual" instead of guided I get a screen offering me the option of setting up further partitions, but only of my internal HDD (sda). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Cannot Install to External USB HDD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
