This bug appears to have been fixed upstream in the 2.5.3 milestone and
the current version of Pidgin in Ubuntu is 2.5.5, I am therefore closing
this bug report. If the problem persists with the Jaunty version, please

to clarify also, the given workaround is successful
to re-iterate:
go to Accounts --> Sametime --> Edit Account
then go to Advanced tab and select the checkbox 'Force login (ignore server
redirects)'
