I have the same problem with the L6820 and ubuntu 10.4 or lubuntu 10.4.
But sometimes it works.

I also tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 but the live cd behaved in the
same fashion. I did not try to press ALT+F2 + ALT+F7 though...
