Ok I have built some kernels with a back port of the latest snd-aloop
driver from the current alsa-drivers tree. Perhaps those who have a
real need for this functionality could try the kernels at the URL below.
They are based on the latest inptrepid -proposed kernel.

I wonder why this driver is only in the alsa-drivers tarball and not
ever merged up to the main kernel drivers. Will ask the maintainers
what they are intending for this driver.

It looks like this was provided by the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24
package for Hardy. Beginning with the Intrepid development cycle the
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 package was merged with the linux kernel
package. Unfortunately it appears this driver wasn't migrated. I'll
