In case it is help to anybody:
I encountered that cryptic error message today when trying to checkout an
online repository with kdesvn.
The solution, however, was that I had mixed up the URL - once I had the URL
correct, the checkup worked properly.

I've rebuild the new kdesvn version 1.0.4 against the old version of subversion
in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~andreas-wenning/+archive
If you install kdesvn 1.0.4-2~hardy1~ppa1 from there you should be able
to downgrade to subversion 1.4.6 at the same time. (You might need to

Tried it. This action deinstalls kdesvn and if reinstalled it wants to
update the subversion. Any tricks ? Something like dpkg --force ?

pointing kdesvn to a repository not containing a repository?
Does the local checkout reside on the local file-system or another type of
filesystem?
Which kind of subversion URL is used? svn+ssh:// http(s):// or another type?
