I fixed my own problem. some gnome stuff got deleted and I reinstalled
it. all is well now.

I went ahead and installed the python and openoffice updates.
I'm able to still access the desktop after installing the python and openoffice
updates.
There are 14 updates left to install. I'm pretty sure that these remaining
updates are causing me to not be able to access the desktop
