Unfortunately, I don't have that monitor available any longer, but I
tried removing and reinserting the USB dongle, and also suspending and
resuming the laptop. In either case, the Caps Lock continued acting as a
Compose key, so it is possible that this bug has been fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. A new version of GNOME Control Center is available on
Maverick and we are wondering if this bug is still an issue for you with

There is another case where this behaviour can be reliably reproduced:
undocking and redocking a laptop. I do this frequently at work, and my
setting (using Caps Lock as another control key) always has to be reset
after this occurs. It's effectively the same operation that Brendan
Kehoe (Hi Brend
I have the same problem. I set Caps Lock as the compose key, and the
setting is lost when the keyboard is disconnected and reconnected.
(Unfortunately, this happens whenever I turn my monitor off--I have the
Logitech radio dongle plugged into a USB plug in the monitor.)

I've had the same problems. I looked in my Xorg.0.log file for how it
was describing my repeated disconnect/reconnect of my usb keyboard, and
saw mention of 'evdev' every time.

the previous comments, we need to investigate the problem further.

I can reproduce this bug (or a similar one) always. This happens if I unplug
and then plug in my USB keyboard. It can be the exact same keyboard and the
same USB socket. See below for steps to reproduce the problem.
1. Open "Keyboard Preferences":

Xorg.0.log after getting the issue? could be that for some reason the
input device are redetected by the xorg server or something

Confirming in both Hardy and Intrepid. What's weird is that I've found
a workaround that doesn't make any sense: go into
preferences->keyboard->layouts->layout options, go to compose key, and
then uncheck and recheck the box. That will make it work again for some
reason.
So, really, it seems like
I think this is a control center bug, where the keyboard layout
preferences are.
