Public bug reported:

This morning 'Ubuntu jaunty (development branch), kernel 2.6.28-2-generic' got
installed through the default update process.

I run the jaunty development branch, dovecot-imapd and thunderbird for my local
mail delivery. This is a one machine desktop setup, fetching my mail with
fetchmail, and feeding it to maildir folders through my own perl-based spam and
filter mechanism.

I observe following erroneous behaviour with this new kernel: when I close my
thunderbird client (which I use to do before shutting down) the percentage
processor time of each of the 5 imapd processes rises to some 20%, thus fully
taking over the cpu.

These processes can not be killed anymore, I tried kill -9 pid1 pid2 ... pid5
as well as `killall -s KILL -g guivho imapd` but they do not react.

The shutdown process hangs when it's almost finished. I have to remove power to
turn off the machine. Restart behaves similarly: it hangs at the end of the
shutdown phase: the ubuntu logo and an empty progress bar are shown (all
segments are black) and nothing happens anymore.

This is repeatable. It always happen when closing thunderbird followed by
shutdown or restart.

If, on the other hand, I do not close thunderbird before shutting down or
restarting, everything works as normal.

I am not sure what kind of info I should provide. Feel free to ask for any
missing info.
