thanks for the report and for the videos it does helps a lot to
understand what's going on in your desktop thanks for it (wish every
report has a demostration), and yes you're right this is a gtk+ issue
and it's known upstream, you can track it here:

Carefully avoided using it? Er, I was using an external mouse!
Ok now I made two further videos with the help of my girlfriend.
This video shows it kinda working. The workaround is pressing enter on
the keyboard:

Err, it worked for me. Ubuntu 8.10 Totem 2.24.3 probably not the same
hardware. It hadn't occured to me to try navigating with the keyboard
as the mouse works fine. I wonder if the laptops mousepad works, they
usually have one and the YouTube movie carefully avoided using it.
