I'm marking this as duplicate of bug 78455.
Using "--fstrans=no" should fix this for you. (or change the default for
TRANSLATE in /etc/checkinstallrc)

I had the same issue with the checkinstall from Intrepids repository so
I tried to install 1.6.1-8 from Jaunty, and that resolved it.
