Hi,
the "surprise" in this case was that the system wasn't booting anymore
(as the kernel requires PAE now) which is more then a cosmetical issue
...
I'll check if I get VMTools compiled now ...

I tried to install package linux-virtual and got kernel 2.6.28-12-server.
This bug now is more than five months old..
