I have the same problem after the update of the kernel from (2.6.27-10-generic
to 2.6.27-11-generic).
I think it is a kernel problem since the is a lot of change is th release note
concerning the brightness.
Which laptop do you have?
I have an asus laptop (may come from asus-acpi).
