Just linked this bug to an upstream bug for intel that already exist.
Confirming this bug... enough info to decide.
The .xsession-errors does seems to have some ... interesting ... messages.

This seems to explain why:
Option "NoAccel" "true"
seems to fix your problem.
But I would suggest you to replace that line by:

Daily build 20090115 still fails and still requires the workaround. Do
note the Alpha 2 announce identified this as a bug on Dec 18, nearly a
month ago.

Workaround from Jaunty forum user ShirishAg75
For an install or upgrade, boot in recovery mode.
For recovery mode on CD Live, edit boot line remove:
quiet splash
add:
single
On the options menu, choose
root shell prompt
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
change the video adapter section
Section "Device"
