I just ran into this problem today using Open Office 2.4.1 and Ubuntu
Intrepid. It turns out that I set the Optimize for speed option on the
Acroread print settings I get garbage/garbled characters. But if I turn
this option off my PDF prints just fine. Hope that helps.
