Public bug reported:

I've installed a 64bit 8.10 (amd64 architecture) on a Dell Optiplex 330.

Things are mostly working, but I cannot get sound to work. Nothing that
should emit sound from the speakers I have plugged in will do so. (Yes,
the speakers are plugged in and turned on.)

The volume control icon has a red X next to it. Right clicking on it
and selecting open volume control gets the message:

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found. (Actually,
there's a longer version of that message that shows up the first time
you do this after starting X, but I don't have that handy and will need
to hit submit on this first. If that message is needed I will attach it
here later. Just ask.)

Trying to track this down, I chased a number of trouble shooting pages
on the net and on your site. They all broke down and failed to help me
figure out what the problem was. The best I can do is gather the
information I was digging up in them and give it to you here.

I ran lspci -v and found the following audio device info:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Dell Device 0220

        Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
        Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

Something I read said this might be useful to someone too:

$ lsmod | grep snd

Additionally, when I bring up gnome-sound-properties and attempt to test
the sound listed under "Sound Playback" - as recommended by this page
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting) I get various
error messages, depending on what I select in the pulldown. Those
messages are:

Selection: HDA Intel AD198x Digital (ALSA)
sound-properties-Message: Error running pipeline 'audiotestsrc wave=sine
freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink': Could not open audio

(Note: there are two other flavors of the above in the choices. The only
difference in the output is I see "osssink1" or "osssink2" in the error
message, near the end when they are tested.)

Selection: ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture

/GstPipeline:pipeline7/GstGConfAudioSink:gconfaudiosink7/GstBin:bin12/GstPulseSink:pulsesink0]
(NOTE: this test hangs gnome-sound-properties, requiring a kill from the
command line)

Finally, the Autodetect setting results in the same hang in
gnome-sound-properties and gives me this message:
sound-properties-Message: Error running pipeline 'audiotestsrc wave=sine
freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink': Failed to connect
stream: Invalid argument [pulsesink.c(634): gst_pulsesink_prepare ():

The notes ask for the Unbunto version this way:
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

At this point I honestly have no idea what package is failing to detect
the sound card.

That's all I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
