What fixed the problem for me for vlc was to install vlc-plugin-pulse,
which was not used by default.
So sudo apt-get install vlc-plugin-pulse stopped the crackling (running
jaunty).

tsched=0 to the PA config file.

I get better quality of audio by doing the following :-
Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and specific this line
load-module module-hal-detect
Add this bit to the same
load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0
Doing so makes the audio frames not drop.
