I have this problem since upgrading to 9.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p.
I did not have this problem on any other release prior to that. I'm
experiencing sudden shutdowns and reboots. Sometimes after such a shutdown i
have to take out the power cable AND battery for a few seconds in order for the
Pay attention if your fan is spinning at all, or spinning at a very low speed.

Hi WeatherGod,
Thanks for your input
During the last weeks I did several changes
- changed the hard disk
- moved from ubuntu 8.04 LTS to a fresh installed ubuntu 9.10
- reinstalled latest flash player from adobe
- cleaned the fan with a vacuum cleaner removing layers of dust
This lead to a

tom_wy, the issue with virtual box doesn't indicate that it is not a
linux software issue, since it is still a linux kernel that is accessing
the hardware. The fact that you haven't had any issues until recently
could be an indicator that some software is using too much resources
when it hasn't
Also, I have seen some BIOSs that can report fan speeds in the BIOS
setup program.

WeatherGod,
I tend to agree that this is not a bug but more a proper system shutdown to
prevent damage.
Nevertheless I attached the requested files (missing the var.log from
suspend... it is not working with my notebook).
The reason for the heavy CPU load is the adobe flash player plugin. The

tom_wy, there is some work being done to improve video performance, and
hopefully, adobe will continue to make updates to their plugin. In the
meantime, might I suggest using the plugin called flashblock? What it
does is puts a placeholder for flash elements on the page, and lets you

for some web sites this is ok, but for watching live tv obviously it is
not an option (also I am not aware of flashblocks for opera browser,

Hello,
I am also affected by this kind of bug. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on my
BenQ Joybook S73U for about 2 years now and had no issues like that for
a long time. But during the last two or three months, I also encounter
this kind of bug, i.e. shutdown (similar to user stlubuntu). The

tom_wy, if you could, can you follow the guide at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI to help provide additional
information? This would be most useful.
I will say this, though, that this is likely not so much a bug as it is
a safety feature. You say that you are experiencing a heavy CPU load
Hello, to help gather further information, could you please follow the
guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI? Also, can anyone
confirm if this is still happening for 9.10 Karmic?

I can confirm this bug.
Cooling fan does not turn on when it should while in screen save (or
powersave screen off) causing an overheat and safety shutdown of laptop
at 95 degrees C.
Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS. 1 MG RAM 2 Mhz
dual core AMD processor (Turion 64-bit),
Bad luck Sergey. It seems the developers don't want to resolve this
problem. I'm hoping life will be better once the next LTS is published.

I upgraded the CPU (HSF) cooling
Lucky you. I have laptop with frequent temperature reboots too and can't even
upgrade cooler. And in 9.04 there is no thermal module which i can rmmod. So
this is real problem for me.

Critical Trip Point - Auto Shutdown
In the end I upgraded the CPU (HSF) cooling to an Arctic Freezer Pro 7.
Now runs 20°C cooler on memory/cpu intensive programs.
So the factory fit fan and heatsink was sufficient for 'Blows but not,
apparently, for the Hardy plus incarnations of Ubuntu.
Still, not too expensive. But at least I
So should I just get a new motherboard if this is a hardware problem?
I'm reliant on this PC and although I have no problems viewing less

No response? No-one else suffering the same problem? Or maybe I have
