I have this problem too. Nothing in /var/crash, just this in dmesg:

high load (99% cpu) and I switch workspaces (ctrl+alt+bkspc)
Hope you mean ctrl+alt+arrow keys.
Otherwise I can reproduce it by starting a bunch of torrents and
switching back and forth between workspaces until it crashes.
I tried installing all related -dbg packages but it didn't produce

Yeah i did, not sure what happened there... ;-)
But IIRC, upgrading to 9.04 fixed this issue for me.
