Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hello!

I have a package I marked with "hold" in aptitude, because the later
versions cause problems. Aptitude uses it correctly, meaning that "safe-
upgrade" and "full-upgrade" don't offer to upgrade it. apt-get also
keeps back the package on "update" and "dist-upgrade".

However, the "updates available" icon stays up all the time, and the
package manager always offers to update the package. Both are wrong I,
think.

It's OK that it doesn't offer the option of holding packages via UI,
that's a complex enough operation and users needing it can use apt. But
interfering with apt is a different matter altogether.

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
