Voicing here my impression. I find counterintuitive that a fully fledged
application does not install a menu entry, even if it can run integrated
within kontact. Why introduce this artificial restriction? I've been
using knode stand-alone for a long time.

This also leaves out the usecase of launching Knode separately from
Kontact while using Kubuntu. I don't like having it integrated, so I
launch it distinctly from Kontact. I think removing the .desktop entry
was a solution looking for a problem.
