It's working now in 9.04, haven't installed 9.10 beta but i believe it
should work w/o any issues.

I encountered a similar problem with Intrepid Ibex on my X61. The
following has instructions that fix this:

it involves adding a modification to the /etc/acpi/thinkpad-brightness-
up.sh and down.sh scripts sending 4 a
