ok this was embarrassing.. we had a stale /etc/ld.so.conf which didn't
include the configuration from /etc/ld.so.conf.d. So closing as invalid.
I suspect the borkage you had was due to stale ld.so.cache or so..

Moving to pulseaudio, since removing it makes my sound work again (after
fiddling with alsamixer).
with pulseaudio installed (even the .15~test1 packages) alsamixer
doesn't work, and playing anything with sound will "freeze", ie. the
playback is halted.

reinstalling broke it again..

Ok, let's get the basics out of the way. Make sure your user is in the
audio group. Make sure ldd on /usr/bin/alsamixer returns expected
results. Make sure you can reproduce the symptom if you remove the
pulseaudio package; if you can, then also remove libasound2-plugins,
then make sure you can rep

I tried the daily ubuntu live, and there I don't get that error but
something different. There still is no sound, and alsamixer fails to
load saying "invalid argument". Running 'pulseaudio -v' also says
"unable to load mixer: invalid argument".
What now?

Ok. Got the same from a fresh kubuntu install of Jaunty. Skype fail with
this error. Amarok works fine.

I can't reproduce this symptom in a live cd boot of 64-bit 20090120.1 in
vbox and bare metal.

I did try a reboot, but maybe the newer kernel (-5) might help here.
Tomorrow I should have that one available to test.
