Default dictionary is unspecified (was Firefox uses en-GB by default instead
of en-US)

Inside firefox type this into the location (URL) bar: about:config
(no spaces around the : in about:config)
A warning screen will pop up. Click whatever it takes to get past it.
Find the text field called Filter and type spell into it to narrow
the list to just spell checker items.
Edit
Still here in Karmic. Chris' fix worked.

Alexander can you please decline the nomination there is no need for it
to be on Oarmic and as for Karmic this isnt really a fix that we can
use AFAIK since it is not a bad bug nor is it a security bug.

I am also having this issue with spellings and I am glad I found this
bug because it solved my problem. However, I imagine this is going to be
very confusing to users that install Ubuntu 9.04.
Firefox on my system was actually using en_AU as the default. Maybe
previous versions of Ubuntu only

I had the same problem. en-US is the default GNOME language, the default
returned by locale, and even the preferred language for displaying
pages. But the en-GB dictionary was the spell-checking default.
This is easily fixed in the preference settings (right-click in a
textbox, choose a setting
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the suggestion. This is definitely a UI quirk and bug. I
had to enable the Check Spelling option first in the drop-down menu.
Then I could access the Languages option. So strange. The correct
way to set this should be through the Firefox preferences, as my
