I am also having this issue with spellings and I am glad I found this bug because it solved my problem. However, I imagine this is going to be very confusing to users that install Ubuntu 9.04. Firefox on my system was actually using en_AU as the default. Maybe previous versions of Ubuntu only

I had the same problem. en-US is the default GNOME language, the default returned by locale, and even the preferred language for displaying pages. But the en-GB dictionary was the spell-checking default. This is easily fixed in the preference settings (right-click in a textbox, choose a setting

Hi Chris, Thanks for the suggestion. This is definitely a UI quirk and bug. I had to enable the Check Spelling option first in the drop-down menu. Then I could access the Languages option. So strange. The correct way to set this should be through the Firefox preferences, as my screenshots
