I can confirm, looking at the code and testing mplayer that this bug is
fixed in Lucid. It probably has been from earlier times, but it is
fixed in karmic. A relatively new release of mplayer is now in place.

the version 1.0rc2 which is quite old... There's has been a lot of

I presume the main reason from an Ubuntu point of view is that the version in
Debian is still rc2.
There doesn't seem to be a 1.0rc3 release which probably doesn't help.
