I am closing this bug report because the bug has been fixed in the
latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx. It won't be fixed in
previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the
requirements for backporting. See

i found out the following:
as asked before, i really did change the splash screen to 'balou'. after
undoing this change xfce4 is working again!

Thanks for reporting this bug. We need a little information to try to
get this fixed. Did you change the splash screen to balou? Please attach
your ~/.xsession-errors log and the entire /var/log/syslog as separate
attachments.
