Looks like it's been running at some point in this session:
** (gnome-volume-control-applet:5798): WARNING **: Connection failed
This might seem like a really silly question, but I have to ask it
anyway - did you kill the original instance of the applet before trying
to run another one? If not,
At no point did I _try_ to start a new instance of the applet.
The three things I tried were:-
1. System - Preferences - Sounds
2. Single click the volume panel applet and choose volume control
3. In a terminal try to run gnome-volume-control
