This keystroke does not work on Jaunty Beta neither. Is there a workaround
that I could use to get the display switching working without the 'display
switching applet'?

I work with a lot of these. I usually suggest logging out with the
external monitor plugged in. Try that to see whether an X reload
detects the display.
