I am invalidating this bug as it seems to be a case of a md superblock
on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb and its uuid being stuffed into mdadm.conf
somehow causing whatever to not 'CLAIM' the other raid partitions. After
removing the uuid belonging to the md superblock on sda and sdb from
mdadm.conf and rmm
Since the Maxtor disks connected to the ITE8212 controller were not
being used by any other kernel driver/module (I stopped the mysterious
raid array made up of /dev/sda and /dev/sdb) I unloaded the pata_it821x
driver and reloaded it with noraid=1 to force pass-through mode. This
made no difference
