@Hezekiah Carty, that was with thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=1,
right? There should be a brighness file somewhere under
/proc/acpi/video. If you cat it, it should show the supported levels.
Echoing one of the supported levels into it should change the level.
Does this delay as well? Can you post

This will have fewer different levels (0-7 here) but they work. Likely those

I just tried rebooting with both the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel
option and the thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=1 option enabled. With
this combination, I can adjust the brightness in what seems to be a
reasonable manner - the changes are quick and seem to cover the full
brightness range with 8

I can try this. My main concern is that, at least without the

Just saw your latest post. So this one works for you with intrepid. Do I

Yes, Jaunty worked out of the box with the beta release on this
laptop.
thank goodness, jaunty is on the way :-)

On my R61, it works somewhat. However, it is very slow to respond (1-2
seconds from hitting the key to a brightness change) and it does not
allow me to change across the full range of brightness settings. The
lowest several brightness settings are not available.
So I would say that this is
Is the result better when (instead of using acpi_backlight=vendor on the
grub line) the following line is placed into one of the config files in
/etc/modprobe.d: options thinkpad_acpi backlight_enable=1?
** Package changed: acpi (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

Do, sorry. The correct option is options thinkpad_acpi
brightness_enable=1

I have a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R61i and am having the same problem.
The function key for the lcd-brightness does NOT work.
Adding acpi_backlight=vendor makes things work, but it creates a delay in
detecting when the power is unplugged.
During this period (60 secs approx.) the brightness keys do
Oh, and through my testing, this appears to be a regression bug.
It has worked flawlessly until 2.6.27-11
Adding acpi_backlight=vendor makes things work, but there is still the delay
as described above.

Hi David,
I found the problem with acpi_backlight=vendor (at least with the kernel
2.6.27-12-generic).
Start with AC adapter pluged in. Everything works. Now disconnect the AC. Try
adjust brightness - it hangs up and the screen slowly will go to very dark with
no ability to be adjusted.
Just

I'm surprised that the kernel favors using video.ko over the vendor
specific options in general, and this makes me wonder if this has
affected any other special acpi interfaces other than thinkpad.
Sony has a similar vendor module (sony_acpi) akin to thinkpad_acpi, I
wonder if they're having

Also affecting my x300. Pre-2.6.27-11 works fine. This is probably
specific to thinkpad-acpi.
Brightness hotkey is recognized, and gnome shows the brightness HUD, but
no changes.

Same symptoms on my R61 - Keys are recognized, the brightness HUD shows

In addition, there is a delay (~ 1/2 - 1 second) between a key press and
