I am also experiencing this problem, I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell
Dimension 2400. Firefox version 3.0.8. This may be unrelated but when I
come back from hibernation mode and this happens to my firefox, it also
seems to be flickering.

I have the same problem. Ubuntu 8.10 on an X61 and Firefox 3.0.7
(Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical 1.0). F11 clears the problem.
Turning off desktop effects works but not very satisfying as a solution.

I originally filed this bug as belonging to gnome-panel. Sebastian
Bacher changed the bug from gnome-panel to compiz. I find that when I
turn off all desktop effects (which were set as "normal"), the bug no
longer occurs. Thanks Sebastian!
