I have to retract my last observation. It happened again today on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. The strange thing is that the standard cpu panel indicator is giving a 50% (=100% of one cpu) reading and the systemmonitor does not show anything in the cpu usage. The total machine is afterwards very slow. S
