My problem was that of a mis-configuration of Evolution in accessing the
correct server (since Sympatico had changed both POP and SMTP server
addresses and the necessary account User Name.)

It likely is reproducible -- since I fixed it by reconfiguring my POP
and SMTP server addresses (changed from pop8 and smtp8 to pophm and
smtphm, respectively) and changed my username. The old configuration
still works in Microsoft Outlook however.
I have no idea what the command-line process
