For me, it has been fixed ever since that 2.6.28 backport containing the
new microcode. Karmic's 2.6.31 kernel works fine, too.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are

Happened to me too today, when I was copying files of sizes from 700MB to 3GB,
but it was mostly random.
Using 2.6.28-16, tried with the backport modules too, it didn't help, the wifi
modules crashed after copying some big files.

I still have this issue in 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18

I think that might be another issue. I have also seen other microcode
errors (also very rarely) when running the 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 kernels,
but this bug used to be 100% reproducible when copying large files.

It still happens in 2.6.28-9-generic, eg at the 1.7GB mark while
downloading a 5.9GB file:
