I think you're right about conflicting packages.
I had the -fluendo-mpegdemux package installed, but not the
-fluendo-mp3 one. When I installed fluendo-mp3 it worked, when I
removed BOTH it worked, with one and not the other it was broken.

Removed the following packages:
gstr
it's impossible to play mp3 files without the right codecs installed,
you maybe have another package installed which is causing the conflict,
could you run : dpkg -l |grep gstreamer > gstreamer.txt and attach the
resulting file to the report? and also please attach a rhyhtmbox log
while running it
