Today's (Feb 18, 2009) Ubuntu 8.10 HAL update may fry the SanDisk Cruzer Micro
USB drive

It turns out there was a physical defect in the USB drive, which
happened to manifest just after I applied the HAL update. Bad luck, but
it happens sometimes. So this bug report should be cancelled, marked as
closed, etc.
