I have the same exact problem here. Same HP 530 laptop, Ubuntu 9.04.
Bugs #376793 and #44058 represent the same issue with different laptops

I have a HP530. Since I own this laptop I have always used Ubuntu. As
far as I remember it was broken in 7.10 then it was fixed in 8.04 and
later it was broken again in 8.10 and 9.04.
