I have a Lenovo X200 laptop running Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04.
This bug was just that...annoying.
I removed splash from the menu.lst file and it appears to have
successfully resolved the problem. Shutdown is now

The bug doesn't appear so far under Ubuntu 9.10. I presume it is a
9.04-related bug. With 9.10 I also have no problems with Usplash
anymore.

Removing splash' from the boot options in grub solved it for me. I did
nothing else but that. Wish they would fix this. I'm using Xubuntu
x64.

I too have exactly same problem and scree0 output as Robert McKee!
I run Jaunty 64 (all updates installed) on my old Medion MD96400 that has an
AMD64 Turion Mobile 1.6GHz CPU and 512 MB ram.

I fixed this bug on my machine, by changing the settings in the BIOS of
the laptop for the video card. By disabling the additional shared RAM
sideport the machine now boots, suspends, and shows usplash

I have the same problem as Robert McKee above. his jpeg image is exactly
the same as mine on screen. I ran Jaunty on HP Pavilion a1228x w/AMD64.
I had to reinstall Intrepid until at such time a resolution is

Same problem for me. Jaunty 64 on Acer Aspire 5735. Fails to kill
remaining processes, / is busy hangs.

I can confirm the issue too.
The issue is solved after the modification.
The Issue does not appear if i hibernate the Notebook.

This bug affects me too. But i think, that / is busy isn't the
problem.
As for me, i see this incorrect behavior only when killing all
remaining processes fails on shutdown/reboot, also it depends on
running terminal applications.
I am attaching picture, that illustrates this.

I can confirm this still exists.
This bug is still present for me while using the live CD x86-64, beta version.
My applied changes to grub listed above still work, but w/o splash. Point is,
this bug appears to be still valid.

I confirm, that workaround by Robert is good for me, when splash is
turned off in menu.lst system reboots well.
But there is another side, the system gets about two time slower at
boot! from 25s to GDM to 40s.

I am experiencing a similar problem.
Shutdown/reboot start the process then it just goes to a flashing cursor
but does not turn the machine off or reboot it. Have tried removing
splash from menu.lst and it make no difference except when I attempt
shutdown/reboot the last text I see is:
