Apparently this was a SAN issue that didn't force a ro on this
filesystem. I noted the issues later and remounted this filesystem and
then it was able to resize online.

I tried e2fsprogs some time ago from karmic: the only problem was that
fsck wasn't implemented (I had to enter the appropriate command
directly, eg fsck.ext4).

A backport for to installed systems would be incredibly useful. e2fslibs
and e2fsprogs from karmic seem to install fine on a 9.04 system; is
there any reason not to just use those packages?
It looks like the System Rescue CD has an appropriate version of
e2fsprogs available, so that's also availab
I think the outcome is serious enough (ie a trashed partition) that it
warrants a backport, at least for installed systems if not the install
CDs. It might be argued that most people using the install CDs won't
have ext4 partitions to resize yet since it only became available with
Jaunty.

Indeed, this should be fixed in Karmic;
as a rule we don't tend to backport major changes like this to released images,
especially since the primary place you do resizing is in the installer and that
would mean remastering CDs
