oh I understand what you mean now, changing item order breaks the muscle
memory of how to use those though, that's not a bug but a design
decision

Yes. Use gconf-editor and search for trash_visible key and set to true. The
Desktop will have a Trash icon. Right click this icon and observe the menu.
