Had this same problem. I think I fixed it by adding "audio" as a group.

I'm on Jaunty, pulse works fine on my x86_64 laptop, but when I've tried
on several x86 desktops and laptops, but none of them will function as a
sink for audio over the network, on a variety of soundcards, crashing
each time with a "can't load module-alsa-sink"

[Jaunty] pulseaudio can't load
I don't, know if fixed or not, I'm using Intrepid with the same problem
with module bluetooth-discover. But just to mention, this bug was fixed
by Colin Guthrie:
Fix a very strange 'file not found' error in module-alsa-card.
This fixes a regression introduced by commit
c341010304064c9a6ae13fab15c
Is there any status update? I really need to know before I go chasing a
red herring.

I'm not seeing pulseaudio (or any other packages) for amd64 or i386 on:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/crimsun/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
>From the Alpha 6 disc, pulseaudio seems to randomly do one of two things:
E: alsa-util.c: snd_pcm_avail_update() returned a value that is exceptionally
large: 13835
Is this symptom still reproducible in a fresh boot of alpha 6?
