I may have the cause, but not the reason why my display goes berserk
from time to time. I have two Windows utilities; PopTray and a Weather
Network applet which I have been running under Wine in the system tray.
Upon launching, the display flashes ghosts of icons or whatever else is
on the desktop

...a follow up. The active window is the one affected with bits and
pieces of it randomly appearing and disappearing at perhaps 1/100 of a
second intervals. I have changed the refresh rate with no discernible
difference.

It also uses 100% of the CPU while this very annoying effect is
happening. I had the System Monitor open during the last episode but
couldn't see a process causing this.

From your log it seems to be that something is polling an Xrandr method
over and over; each time it is called it blinks the screen and adds some
lines to your Xorg.0.log; this is normal. You need to figure out which
process is doing these calls.
Look in your /var/log/dpkg.log to help narrow down
I should add that this is definitely not a monitor problem as I have
Intrepid on my main partition, and no flashing occurs while running in
that mode.
