This can be an OGG playing problem of gdmplay mentioned by a post on
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7087507postcount=4 .
I tried it and I have right login sound since I changed the aplay to the
play form of sox application.

I'm having the same problem. After doing some research, I've learned
the snd_intel8x0 driver is really broken in the kernel that shipped with
Jaunty, 2.6.28. It's since been fixed in newer kernels.
I tried upgrading to a newer kernel, and it does fix this issue.

Sounds more like it's distorting due to being excessively loud. I've
never had any music play this loud on my laptop before - which is intel
ICH7 based
