I just did an update and encountered the same problem. I have the latest
available updates, but unlike Christopher's situation the problem isn't
gone here :-/

Maybe the & is misplaced there? If & normally means that the started
process is backgrounded, than we would want to write something like
xhost +si:localuser:`id -un` & > /dev/null
or
xhost +si:localuser:`id -un` > /dev/null &
or am I mistaken? I can't remember whether in bash or whatever >& mea

the error is in /etc/X11/60x11-localhost, or at least appears to be
however, removing the & from the last line made me able to login.

I can confirm this bug.
cat .xsession-errors
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-localhost: 4: Syntax error: Bad fd number
Changing shell from dash to bash solves the problem, but GNOME becomes
very unstable.
