Once I upgraded to Karmic and updated my nvidia drivers, the problem
went away. I wouldn't mind testing Lucid and the mainline kernel to see
if it is still a problem.

If it remains an issue,
I've done a system update and now, all works fine (shutdown/hibernate/suspend
to RAM)
I think the problem came from nvidia-drivers.

I have the same problem with my XPS M1330, jaunty and nvidia drivers
version 180. My computer won't shut down and vertical bars appear.
